Reading speed claims and the ink behind them

Quoted print speeds apply to draft or plain text; photos and colour pages take much longer. Figures labelled ESAT in ipm come from a standard test and are more realistic than a bare maximum. Resolution such as 4800 by 1200 dpi describes dot placement, not sharpness alone. Printing method matters for upkeep: thermal and piezo heads behave differently, and some designs put the head in the cartridge. Models with more ink colours handle photos better. Check how many cartridges the printer uses and whether they are separate tanks.

Is an inkjet or a laser better for occasional printing?

Inkjet usually fits occasional colour and photo printing, but nozzles can dry if it sits idle for weeks. Run a short print every fortnight, or consider a laser printer if you mostly print text and leave the machine unused for long stretches.

What does ppm mean on an inkjet?

Pages per minute, normally measured on simple text pages in draft or default mode. Photos, graphics and double-sided prints are slower. Treat the figure as a ceiling and compare ESAT figures where the listing gives them.

Do I need a wide-format printer for A3 prints?

No. Many desktop models print A3 or tabloid. Wide-format printers use rolls and are meant for posters, drawings and signage at 24-inch widths or more, and larger models need floor space and a stand.
