Production switcher or simple selector: do you need to mix live?

A basic HDMI switcher selects one input and passes it to a single output, like an input button on a television. A production switcher is built for live mixing: you can cut or dissolve between sources, often with picture-in-picture, a preview monitor and audio control. If you only swap between a laptop and a console, a selector is enough. If you run a stream or event with several cameras, a production switcher saves hours of workarounds and keeps transitions clean on screen.

Inputs, outputs and frame rates that must agree

Count the inputs you need today and one spare, and check the output type: HDMI, SDI or both. Look at the highest format supported, since HDMI 1.4 carries 4K only at 30 Hz while HDMI 2.0 carries 4K at 60 Hz. Mixed sources are the usual trap. Cameras set to different frame rates can cause a visible glitch on a cut unless the switcher synchronizes its inputs. Audio is a second check: some units embed audio from each input, others offer a separate 3.5 mm or analog audio connection.

Questions about HDMI and Video Production Switchers

Is a production switcher the same as a KVM switch?
No. A KVM switch shares one keyboard, mouse and monitor between computers, while a production switcher mixes live video sources with cuts and transitions. They solve different problems and are not interchangeable.
Why does the screen go black for a second when I change input?
The display and source renegotiate their connection, including copy protection, each time the picture changes. Switchers that hold a fixed EDID or reclock the signal make the change faster and cleaner.
Do I need a 4K switcher to stream in 1080p?
No. A 1080p switcher is enough if every camera and the stream are 1080p. Choose 4K inputs only if your sources are 4K or you want headroom for later upgrades, and remember that 4K at 60 Hz also needs matching cables.
