Reading AV500, AV1000 and AV2000 honestly

The AV number is a theoretical link rate shared between both directions, and real throughput is usually well below it and varies with the wiring. AV500 handles streaming and ordinary browsing. AV1000 and AV2000 give more headroom for 4K video and busy households. The Ethernet port on the adapter also caps the result: a 10/100 port can never pass more than 100 Mbit/s, so a fast powerline label with slow ports wastes the upgrade. Look for gigabit ports if you want the speed to be usable.

Kits, pass-through sockets and the wiring trap

A starter kit contains two adapters: one beside your router, one where you need a wired connection. Add more adapters from a compatible standard to reach other rooms. Plug adapters into wall sockets, not extension leads or surge strips, which weaken or filter the signal; a pass-through socket on the adapter keeps the outlet usable. Both ends must be on the same home wiring, behind one electricity meter, and be paired, usually with a button. Very old wiring, heavy appliances or separate circuits can reduce speed.

Questions about Powerline Adapters and Kits

Will powerline work in my house?
It depends on the wiring. Adapters on the same circuit usually work best; separate circuits, old wiring and noisy appliances can cut speed or stop the link, so try the pair in the rooms you plan to use before fixing it in place.
Can I mix powerline adapters from different brands?
Often, when they share the same standard such as HomePlug AV, because those adapters are designed to interoperate. A faster AV2 adapter paired with an older AV one works at the older, slower level. Do not mix with adapters built on a different standard.
Is powerline better than Wi-Fi?
Neither is always better. Powerline gives a wired port that walls do not weaken, which suits a console or TV. Wi-Fi is easier and needs no adapters. If the wiring is poor, powerline underperforms, so try both before deciding.
