Dell Precision 5530 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5530 is a 15.6" mobile workstation built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i9-8950HK six-core processor, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, a 4 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD and a dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P2000 with 4 GB GDDR5. It runs Windows 10 Pro and features a 3840 x 2160 UHD IPS touch display with 72% colour gamut coverage. Connectivity includes two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, one Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI 2.0 and a headset jack.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

Engineers, designers and analysts who need a colour-accurate UHD touch screen, workstation-class graphics and multi-terabyte local storage in a silver Precision chassis will find the specification aligned with those workloads. Buyers who require more than 16 GB of system memory, a newer processor architecture or a higher refresh-rate panel should evaluate other configurations.

The specification that decides fit

The 3840 x 2160 UHD IPS touch panel with 72% colour gamut is the single attribute that determines whether this Precision 5530 matches a workflow; if the workload depends on that exact resolution, touch input and gamut coverage, the laptop fits, otherwise a different display specification is required.

Questions about this item

How hot or loud does the 6-core i9-8950HK get under sustained load?

The chassis uses dual fans to move air through the Precision 5530, keeping the 2.90 GHz i9-8950HK and its 4.80 GHz turbo ceiling stable during long renders.

Which cables or docks must I already own to drive the 3840 x 2160 touchscreen and Quadro P2000 over Thunderbolt 3?

A Thunderbolt 3 cable or dock with x4 PCIe lanes carries video to the 15.6" UHD panel and external displays, while HDMI 2.0 handles a second 4K monitor.

Will my existing SATA SSDs work alongside the 4TB PCIe NVMe M.2 drive already installed?

The Precision 5530 accepts SATA M.2 modules in its second slot, so older SATA drives can sit beside the 4TB NVMe boot volume without adapters.
