Precision 5530 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5530 is a 15.6 inch UHD touchscreen mobile workstation powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i9-8950HK six-core processor. It includes 8 GB DDR4 RAM, a 256 GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD and a dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P2000 with 4 GB GDDR5 video memory. Windows 11 Pro comes pre-installed.

Upgrading from integrated graphics

This system replaces machines that rely on integrated graphics or lower-core-count CPUs for professional 3D and compute workloads. The jump is worth it when applications demand certified Quadro drivers, a 3840 x 2160 IPS panel with 72% colour gamut and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity for external GPUs or storage. Buyers who need more than 8 GB memory or larger internal storage should configure a different unit.

Installation and common issues

The laptop arrives fully assembled with the Dell AC adapter included; no internal hardware installation is required for typical use. Memory and storage upgrades are possible via accessible M.2 and SODIMM slots up to 32 GB DDR4 and larger NVMe SSDs. Thermal throttling can occur under sustained heavy loads if the dual-fan cooling vents are obstructed. Thunderbolt 3 peripherals may need firmware updates for full compatibility.

Questions about this item

What are the exact dimensions and screw locations for mounting a replacement M.2 SSD in the 5530?

The laptop uses a PCIe NVMe M.2 256 GB drive; remove the base cover screws, locate the single M.2 slot at 30 mm length, insert the drive at an angle and secure it with the retention screw.

Which BIOS setting must be enabled before the NVIDIA Quadro P2000 4 GB GDDR5 is recognised after a clean Windows 11 Pro install?

Enter BIOS, set Thunderbolt security to "No Security" and enable PCIe x4 for the Thunderbolt 3 port; the Quadro driver then installs without error.

How often should the dual-fan cooling assembly be cleaned to maintain the i9-8950HK boost up to 4.80 GHz?

Blow compressed air through both fan intakes every 6 months; heavy workloads may require opening the chassis annually to remove dust from the heatsink fins.
