Large dual-storage laptop

The ASUS VivoBook S712JA-WH54 pairs a 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD with a 1TB hard drive on a 17.3-inch Full HD IPS panel. It is built for students and office workers who need a single machine for documents, media and light multitasking. Buyers who want discrete graphics or a touchscreen should look elsewhere.

Thermals and power

A 45W power supply charges the 3-cell 47 WHr battery while the Intel Core i5-1035G1 runs at a 1.00GHz base with a 3.6GHz turbo. The integrated Intel UHD graphics share system memory, keeping heat and fan noise low during typical productivity work.

Bundled input and connectivity

A silver backlit full-size keyboard with numeric keypad and a fingerprint reader are built in. Ports include USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, a micro SD reader and a combo audio jack. Wi-Fi 6 AX201 and Bluetooth 5.1 handle wireless links.

Questions about this item

How do I add more RAM to the VivoBook S712JA and what slot mistake should I avoid?

The laptop has 4GB soldered and a single SO-DIMM slot occupied by a 4GB DDR4 module; to increase memory you must replace that module rather than add a second one.

Which storage part will I likely replace first and what spec must the new drive match?

The 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD is the boot drive and will fill up first; any replacement must be an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD.

What thermal limit appears first during a long heavy workload on the Core i5-1035G1?

The 45W power adapter and 47Wh battery constrain sustained turbo clocks, so the CPU drops from 3.6GHz toward its 1.0GHz base under continuous load.
